The Seer's Saga
Episode 5 - Mez Crater

The story so far:
Seydes has decided to begin a cult. Declared a "Seer" at Listening Rock but declared heretic at X'is by Ellik priests, Seydes, nonetheless, now has a sizeable following. Mez Island is a popular place for cults especially the meteor crater. Experiences at a fossil digging site and, later, in Degazi among the Boog cult, may have influenced Seydes to establish a cult and led to the first Speaking that marks the foundation of the cult.

Island of Cults

Mez Island

We have arrived at Mez island. At the port, Seydes registers with the cult authorities. The Seer only glances at the forms and hands them to me - Z.

The walk up to the crater is almost a parade - Seydes and me in front; the Persuaded at a respectful distance behind us. Must be several hundreds.

The only communications they have gotten from the Seer are: "clean up after yourselves" and "be quiet, you hear nothing while talking." - Z.

The site allotted to us is quite pleasant - not close to the Ellik or Boog compounds. From here, you can see Tetus Lake in the bowl of the crater - a bowl with a crack through which the outflow from Tetus drops to the sea.

Seydes seems pleased with Mez and our piece of it - Z.

Seydes has had me call the Persuaded to a Speaking. I think this is the first time they have been invited - normally they just corner the Seer and begin asking questions.

They are excited and rush off to bathe. Amusing to see a couple hundred naked people crowding into the stream - and shoving at each other for more room. We will have to restore the stream - Z.

After Seydes' Speaking, the number of followers is now about 50. The rest heard and then packed and left.

Seydes ignored this and meditated. The remaining now seem content to do the same - Z.

Ed. Note:

This is the first and only Speaking at Mez when Syedes established the Null Monk order.

The "Hole" in the title refers to the bowl of Mez crater. This Speaking prompted many people, who had followed Seydes to Mez, to leave.

Nine distinct schools were founded by the Un-Persuaded. Three of these schools eventually spanned the entire Oalon Sector.

Speaking from the Hole

"When you think you are in control of your life,
you are happy and do not look further.

When you think you do not control what is happening,
you are unhappy and seek only control.

We live briefly inside life's spontaneity - only a part of a wave in a sea;
you can never control the current.
But, you may row.
When you see that, you are free."

While Seydes meditates, a building and gardens are begun. While Seydes naps, the Meditation hall is designed and the path to the lake is paved with flat stones. While Seydes wanders about in the woods, the followers organize themselves, establish a hierarchy, and assign responsibilities - Z.

Seydes is asked what name they should use for themselves. "You aspire to no aspiration. You walk the Null path. This makes you Null monks." The Persuaded appear to like this and go off to discuss what uniforms they should wear now. Seydes goes off as well but alone - Z.

The monks decided, almost, on plain cloth cut into an upper shirt with a hood and baggy pants. Almost because some wanted a red dot on the chest - I do not understand why - so, finally, the red dot was declared not obligatory - Z.

The Null monks have begun to compile their recordings of Seydes. They plan to make a thick book (there appear to be several versions and interpretations of some events). They plan a "Tome" - The Book of Seydes. They write from their memory what was said and what it really meant. Seydes remains silent about this and will not read what they write - Z.

Seydes said we should go to Mez and start a cult - and we have. It has happened. With almost no effort from Seydes. That the followers who left did so is not curious; that the remaining are content with "nothing" is what is curious. A group of the cult has identified themselves as the More Persuaded. These are the same people who are writing the Book of Seydes - Z.

Meditation Hall

We have been here several annual cycles and the cult is thriving and attracts pilgrims. Seydes makes appearances (first, second, and last meal; afternoon oca wine and meditation), says nothing, answers questions with silence, and then goes off.

The sea can be seen from the ridge of the crater. I often see Seydes climbing up there along a forested path to gaze toward it. A desire to see things not yet seen and experience things not yet known... I suspect an itch is growing in the heart of the Seer - Z.

Mez Harbour

Today, Seydes called the monks and said only "good bye." They were confused and protested. No more than good bye from the Seer.

To me, Seydes remarks: "I will become old and die - but not here. They no longer require me. And I no longer require them" - Z.

The monks have come to the port to see us off. The Seer has promised to come back. The monks make assurances that all will be kept in readiness for Seydes' return.

Seydes is excited to board the ship and, in moments, Mez no longer exists - Z.
